You may wonder while reading this article, what has this topic got to do with education? Well, you see, this is part of my call or assignment whichever way you prefer to put it. I am drawn to Youths and Children in a different way. I’m not a Sunday school teacher, I’ve done some measure of babysitting as a young girl, but wait, did you know I was scared of children? What can I say, an introvert, not as bold as some people I admire deeply and adore, like my long standing friend… Deve Kogi.
Did I know the call was there before? Not really, God sort of put me on the spot when the fullness of time came in His plan for me to begin this line of duty. He sent me to go teach and minister to some kids in a school, and take nothing.
In 2 Samuel 23, within that archive is a soldier, he is numbered as 3rd in place amongst David’s mighty men.
The intriguing part of this story for me is, he defends a field of lentils. What has a soldier got to do with a field of lentils? Doesn’t that look beneath his qualification, or at least outside of his job description?
We find this in verse 11:
“And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines had gathered together into a troop where there was a piece of ground full of lentils. So the people fled from the Philistines. But he stationed himself in the middle of the field, defended it, and killed the Philistines. So the Lord brought about a great victory.
2 Samuel 23:11-12 NKJV
Notice, that in the end of that duty, THE LORD brought about a great victory! So, God was interested in that field. A field of lentils!
Let me ask you, what is the field the Lord is expecting you to defend? To push back the enemy, until God’s interest is secured?
We are called to minister in dynamic ways, to the elderly, the youths, teenagers; and children are not left behind either. Some play with them and instill Christ, some teach in Bible Clubs , or perhaps like my husband and I, we move amidst students at all levels, especially within the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
Whatever God wants you to do as it pertains to the life of a child or a person, do it wholeheartedly, in it lies the victory that God seeks. You will fulfill your call if you don’t look down on what you are supposed to do. Remember, it is the Lord who will approve you, not men.
Teach children along the lines of what God wants them to become, so as arrows in His hand they will not derail.
You are what you eat. right?”
So, defend the field. Some God given assignments may seem like this field… insignificant in the eyes of men. Some children may seem like this field… lentils. Everyone may have deserted and retreated for fear of what is involved, but can you trust God and be that Shammah, who will bring the message of salvation, security and purpose to them?
